Session Synopses The Practice Nurse Clinical Education Program is made up of larger, lecture style seminars, and smaller breakout sessions and practical, hands-on workshops, allowing you the freedom to put together the program you want. Saturday 22nd May 2010 Preparing for Accreditation This session will explore what practices need to show for accreditation or reaccreditation. Learn some helpful tips and hints that will assist you through this process, and find out about what resources are available for you to use that are designed specifically to guide and support you throughout the accreditation process ECG Interpretation - Tips and the Pitfalls This session will provide an examination of the varying facets of ECG interpretation and the implications and clinical significance of these findings. Examples will be presented. The Future of the Practice Nurse Role - challenging the status quo The role of the Practice Nurse in Australia and overseas is evolving rapidly and in different directions. Hear about the development of the profession, and how the roles and responsibilities of the Practice Nurse might evolve in coming years.Legal Issues - where do you stand? Professional indemnity and legal issues are an area of uncertainty for many Practice Nurses. Nurses face a range of legal issues in general practice such as documentation, duty of care, consent and accepting medical orders. Understand the issues and plan your professional protection. Emergencies in General Practice - Policies and Procedures This session will look at how to deal with common emergencies ranging from anaphylaxis and asthma attacks to chest pains that may present in the general practice setting. Principles of effective triage will also be discussed in the context of an emergency situation. Performing Doppler and ABI Assessments As a growing role for practice nurses, this session will enable you to find out more about how to perform Doppler assessments and attain ankle brachial indices (ABI’s). Negotiation Skills - How to sell yourself This session will teach you about what skills and tools you can use to negotiate effectively and increase your assertiveness. Mastering effective negotiation skills is vital, as they relate to many aspects of the practice nurse role including discussions with managers and patients. Hydration in Aged Care and Infants Dehydration may not always be evident and can be overlooked whilst dealing with the causative agents. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration. Life after Cancer – what your patients want to know This session will provide information for Practice Nurses about how to support their patients either newly diagnosed or undergoing treatment for various cancers including breast cancer. Three Common Dermatological Problems Facing Patients of the Practice Nurse This session focuses on three common dermatological problems facing patients of the Practice Nurse - eczema, psoriasis and acne/rosacea. The aim of this session is to discuss the management of each of these conditions in the context of the young adult. Immunisation Update - the new innovation in Flu plus an update on Travel Health This seminar will explore the benefits of vaccinating via the intradermal route and introduce an innovative delivery system which will revolutionise flu vaccination as we know it. Also learn principles of pre-travel healthcare and recommended vaccines. Plastering This session will update attendees on the types of materials used in plaster casting. You will also have the opportunity to view a practical demonstration of the most suitable techniques in casting. Sunday 23 May 2010 Achieving a More Effective Use of the MBS This session will provide you with an update of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) including Item Numbers relevant to practice nurses. Learn more about this important facet of your role so that you can improve patient outcomes in your practice.
