The Practice Nurse Clinical Education Program is made up of a number of keynote sessions, streams and breakout sessions, allowing you the freedom to put together the program you want.
KEYNOTE SESSIONS
Keynote Session1: Communicating the Value of Practice Nurses
With the evolution of the practice nurse role, the importance of understanding and being able to communicate to others your contribution to your workplace has increased. Learn how to recognise your contribution and how to empower yourself, deal with cultural and organisational change and manage stress.
Keynote Session 2: 4-year-old Healthy Kids Check
What does the recently implemented Healthy Kids Check entail? This session will provide an essential review of what areas of assessment the Healthy Kids Check item number covers, how they are assessed and what further information you will need to know to take part in this important activity. A large question and answer component will be incorporated in this session.
Keynote Session 3: Development of the Practice Nurse Role and Scope of Practice
The role of the practice nurse in Australia and overseas is evolving rapidly and in different directions. Hear about the development of the profession, and how the roles and responsibilities of the practice nurse might evolve in coming years. This session will also provide you with the opportunity to have your queries about your scope of practice answered.
Keynote Session 4: Motivational Interviewing
This session is a must-attend for all practice nurses: learn how motivational interviewing can be readily incorporated into your role to achieve the best health outcomes possible with your patients.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS - SATURDAY
Promoting Sexual Health for Young People
General practice is an important and under utilised setting for health promotion with young people. This session will aim to develop practice nurse skills in this important area. Family Planning QLD
Practical: Injection Techniques
This session will enable participants to learn and practice appropriate injection techniques. Covering techniques for administering vaccinations and blood glucose monitoring, this session will also provide you with some skills to teach patients how to give themselves insulin injections. Update or build on your skills in this important area.
Chronic Kidney Disease and the Practice Nurse
Improve your knowledge of the population at increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the importance of early detection. This session will discuss the role of the practice nurse in slowing the progression of CKD, including the impact of lifestyle modification and relevant item numbers.

Bridging the Gap Practice Nurse Initiative
The Bridging the Gap Initiative aims to address the gap between evidence for treatment and outcomes achieved in patients at risk of chronic diseases. The role of the practice nurses in patient screening, recall and education will be explored with a focus on cardiovascular disease. This 3-hour program is RCNA/APNA accredited. Pfizer
Practical: Infection Control
The session will explore the importance and practice of infection control in the general practice setting. What solutions do you need to use, when and how do you need to utilise soaking to control infections, and what are your requirements for maintaining a clean and sterile workplace? This session will also guide you as to what resources can be used in this area.
Care Planning and Item Numbers
Care planning is a vital role for all practice nurses to ensure the smooth running of your practice. This session will build on your knowledge of template development, monitoring and maintaining recall and reminder systems (including how to create templates to utilise electronic systems) as well as providing an update on practice nurse item numbers.
Practical: Compression Bandaging
Learn about the application of compression bandages, and the importance of ensuring this is done correctly. In what situation should you utilise compression bandaging, and when and why is it more effective than other methods of care? ConvaTec

BREAKOUT SESSIONS & STREAMS - SUNDAY
Mental Health Nurse Initiative
This session will provide a review on the effectiveness of multidisciplinary nursing teams in managing mental health issues in general practice. Important considerations in the management of mental health emergencies that commonly occur in general practice will also be incorporated into the session.

Practical: Setting up Chronic Disease Clinics
Learn some practical tips on how to set up a variety of chronic disease clinics in your practice. This interactive session will assist you with implementing and maintaining a clinic in your practice, including creating templates to utilise electronic systems effectively and monitoring recall and reminder systems. Learn how to overcome some of the common pitfalls associated with setting up a chronic disease clinic.
Acute wounds – tears, cuts & minor burns
Learn about the prevention and management of the most common acute wounds presenting in general practice.
Clinical Policies and Procedures
This session will enable participants to build on the skills they currently have in both the areas of developing clinical policies and procedures for use in general practice, and also effectively maintaining them. This workshop will also enable participants to develop and sustain effective recall and reminder procedures.
Practical: Dietary Management
Giving dietary advice is both a common and important role for practice nurses. This session will teach you some practical advice that you can give your patients to help them improve their diets. How can you promote good health to your patients and assist them to avoid common pitfalls in achieving a healthy diet?
Chronic wounds – venous leg ulcers & the diabetic foot
Including trouble shooting the wound that won’t heal. Learn about the prevention and management of chronic wounds, venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers. Coloplast
IT Management – Recalls and Reminders and Letter Writer
Learn how to set up an efficient system to organise all of the people and steps involved in the recall/reminder process using a simple work flow system that can be used with any medical software program. Also learn how to create, modify and import templates plus features that will take the frustration out of letter writing and Care Plans.
Practical: ECG Interpretation
Learn how to correctly and meaningfully interpret what an ECG indicates. When do you need to be concerned by the results?
Immunisation (including Travel Health & Pertussis)
Learn principles of pre-travel health care requirements. This session will provide an update on current immunisation issues, new vaccines and changes to the schedule or handbook relating to this important aspect of travel health. Additionally, the session will discuss the importance of immunisation for pertussis; with both natural and disease induced immunity to the disease waning over time, those who have close contact with newborns need a pertussis booster to reduce the risk of passing it on (as recommended by the NHMRC).
