Day 1 Friday 16 July 2010

Preparing for Accreditation
This session will explore what practices need to show for accreditation or reaccreditation. Learn some helpful tips and hints that will assist you through this process, and find out about what resources are available for you to use that are designed specifically to guide and support you throughout the accreditation process.

Point of Care Testing and the role of nurses
Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists Practice Nurses are at the coal face of testing blood in a GP practice. What is involved?
If you have a PoCT device currently or your GPs are thinking about using these diagnostic tools in the practice this practical session will guide you through devices, training , fitting PoCT into your and your  GPs workflow and quality management.
Engage in this practical session and trial some commonly used PoCT equipment.

Ear Examinations
This session will guide you through what you should take into account when performing ear examinations, both for your younger and older patients. You will also learn what problems can be diagnosed by performing ear examinations, and possible recommendations for treatment of these conditions.

The Practice Nurse Role in Cervical Screening
This session will examine how practice nurses can contribute to cervical screening within general practice. Providing this service to women enhances nurse's practice at an advanced level, provides enhanced access to cervical screening and contributes to the capacity of general practice.

Diabetes Update- new guidelines & new pharmacotherapy's
Guidelines for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) have been revised due to the availability of new therapeutic agents.  This session provides an overview of the current T2DM management guidelines, and explores the role of incretion therapeutics.

Suturing
This session will provide an introduction to suturing and the removal of sutures, whilst outlining and demonstrating the current trends in wound closure. This is a practical session in setting up, assisting and performing suturing.

Portfolio Development
As part of National Professional Registration, practice nurses will soon be required to maintain an individual professional portfolio. Learn why you need to have a portfolio, what you should include in it, and how to maintain it to ensure you meet the new regulatory requirements.

Achieving a more effective use of the MBS
This session will provide you with an update of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) including Item Numbers relevant to practice nurses. Learn more about this important facet of your role so that you can improve patient outcomes in your practice.

Plastering
This session will update attendees on the types of materials used in plaster casting. You will also have the opportunity to view a practical demonstration of the most suitable techniques in casting.

Hydration in Aged Care and infants
Dehydration may not always be evident and can be overlooked whilst dealing with the causative agents. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration. Hydration Pharmaceuticals nurse educator will help you implement simple procedures in your practice to assist your patients with this condition.

Three common dermatological problems facing patients of the practice nurse
This session focuses on three common dermatological problems facing the PN – eczema, psoriasis and acne/rosacea. The aim of this session is discuss the management for each of these conditions in the context of the child.

Life After Cancer – what your patients want to know
This session will provide information for practice nurses about how to support their patients either newly diagnosed or undergoing treatment for various cancers including breast cancer.   

Chronic Kidney Disease & the PN
Improve your knowledge of the population at increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the importance of early detection. This session will discuss the role of the Practice Nurse in slowing the progression of CKD, including the impact of lifestyle modification and relevant item numbers.

Emerging Role of Practice Nurses in HIV,HCV and STI Management
This session will include the emerging role of practice nurses in sexual health screening and history taking, vaccinations, hepatitis C management, infection control, coordinating GP management care plans for chronic disease management and potential future involvement in HIV & HCV shared care.

Postnatal Support – common problems with new babies
This session will update you on the common issues that can occur with new babies. It will provide information that you can pass onto you patients about problems such as breastfeeding, sleeping and illness prevention.

Travel Health
Learn principles of pre-travel health care requirements. This session will include information on appropriate nursing measures that can be taken to prevent common infectious diseases encountered when travelling, such as mosquito and 'Bali Belly'.

EGG Interpretation- Tips and Pitfalls
Examination of the varying facets of ECG interpretation & the implications of the findings & clinical significance of these findings. Examples will be presented.      

Setting up Chronic Disease Clinics
Learn some practical tips on how to set up and maintain chronic disease clinics in your practice, including creating templates to utilise electronic systems effectively and monitoring recall and reminder systems. Learn how to overcome some of the common pitfalls associated with setting up a chronic disease clinic.

Emergencies in General Practice- Policies, Procedures and Resources
This session will look at how to deal with common emergencies ranging from anaphylaxis, chest pains and triage in patients that may present at the surgery.
 
Continence Management
Bladder and bowel problems are common yet many people are reluctant to talk about it, even with their doctor. Practice nurses have a key role in identifying clients with incontinence and promoting healthy bladder and bowel habits. This workshop will inform nurses of the assessment and management of bladder and bowel problems, and how to link patients to continence services and product subsidy schemes. Find out how continence management can be incorporated into GP Management Plans.
Continence Management Advice Service (CMAS)

Development of the Practice Nurse Role and Scope of Practice*
The role of the practice nurse in Australia and overseas is evolving rapidly and in different directions. Hear about the development of the profession, and how the roles and responsibilities of the PN might evolve in coming years. This session will also provide you with an insight into your current and possible future scope of practice, and will provide you with the opportunity to have your queries about your scope of practice answered.
