Day 1 – Friday 20 August 2010
Current Trends in Practice Nurse Salary and Conditions
This session will provide an update on the results of the 2009 APNA salary and conditions survey. You will have the opportunity to compare your current salary and conditions to those of your colleagues, and discuss these issues with other practice nurses.
Nutrition, Function and Ageing (Part 1 & 2)
Practice nurses play an important role in the screening and management of older patients at risk of malnutrition. Through GPMPs, medication and home medication reviews, and preventative screenings significant improvements can be made to supporting the health, quality of life and function of ageing Australians. Screening recommendations, use of available tools such as the MNA® a validated nutrition screening and assessment tool, and interventions will be presented in the workshop to help improve the management and outcomes of older patients in GP.
Postnatal Support – common problems with new babies
This session will update you on the common issues that can occur with new babies. It will provide information that you can pass onto you patients about problems such as breastfeeding, sleeping and illness prevention.
Compression Bandaging
Learn about the application of compression bandages, and the importance of ensuring this is done correctly. In what situation should you utilise compression bandaging, and when and why is it more effective than other methods of care?
Point of Care Testing and the Role of Practice Nurses
Practice Nurses are at the coal face of testing blood in a GP practice. What is involved? f you have a PoCT device currently or your GPs are thinking about using these diagnostic tools in the practice this practical session will guide you through devices, training , fitting PoCT into your and your GPs workflow and quality management. Engage in this practical session and trial some commonly used PoCT equipment.
ECG Interpretation and Cardiovascular Risk Calculation
This session will examine the varying facets of ECG interpretation and the implications of the findings and clinical significance of these findings. You will you also learn about the use of a cardiovascular risk calculator which is a highly valuable tool in the general practice setting. Learn how this process can help your patients to ensure their health and wellbeing in the long term.
Emergencies in General Practice - polices and procedures
This session will look at how to deal with common emergencies ranging from anaphylaxis and asthma attacks to chest pains that may present in the general practice setting. Principles of effective triage will also be discussed in the context of an emergency situation.

Legal Issues- where do you stand?
Professional indemnity and legal issues are an area of uncertainty for Practice Nurses. Nurses face a range of legal issues in general practice such as documentation, duty of care, consent and accepting medical orders. Understand the issues and plan your professional protection.
Hydration in Aged Care and Infants
Dehydration may not always be evident and can be overlooked whilst dealing with the causative agents. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration. Hydration Pharmaceuticals nurse educator will help you implement simple procedures in your practice to assist your patients with this condition.
Performing and Interpreting Spirometry
This session will enable you to learn the basics for performing spirometry and interpreting the results. Additionally, be informed about how spirometry can help you to identify conditions such as asthma, COPD and cystic fibrosis.

You will also hear about the new requirements for the attainment of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
